The Lehigh Wheelmen will be celebrating Labor Day with bicycling and gluttony. The annual Donut Derby fun ride begins at 9 a.m. Monday from the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, otherwise known as the Lehigh Velodrome.
This event rewards both speed and consumption. Riders will pedal 12 miles to the first donut stop, consume as many donuts as they are able, then ride another 12 miles to a second donut stop and repeat. Then, 11 miles back to the velodrome for a total of 35 miles. Medals will be given riders finishing in the least time. Three-minute deductions will made for each donut eaten - and held down. “Donut Adjusted Time” will determine winners. There will be age group winners and the chance to win the coveted “Spare Tire Championship Belt.”
Registration for the ride is $15, and $20 per tandem. Online registration on BikeReg.com closes at 9 a.m. Saturday. Same-day registration, at $20, will also be available.
A hot lunch will be provided after the ride, if you want it.
