Lancaster County men headed to the beach

June 19th, 2008 8:45 am · 0 comments

Steve Helm, of East Petersburg, and Greg Weaver, of Lancaster, are taking the long way to the beach in Florida this year.

The two men will leave early Saturday morning on their bicycles with maps and a single change of clothing. They plan to arrive in Largo, Fla. twelve days later, on July 2.

Helm, 47, and Weaver, who will be celebrating his 56th birthday Saturday as he starts the trip, plan to ride about 120-miles each day as they make their way south along the East Coast. They plan to stay at the homes of several fellow cyclists, who provide a bed and hospitality through the warm showers program.

As part of the ride, Helm is raising money for the non-profit United Disabilities Services. He is hoping to raise $1,000. Weaver plans to raise $400-$500 for his church, Grace Community Church. Anyone wishing to donate to United Disabilities Services on behalf of Helm’s ride, may call Karen Mauss at UDS, at 397-1841.
