Grandview Heights crit revived

June 18th, 2008 1:49 pm · 0 comments

Local bicycle racing team Spinners Cycling has stepped in to revive a second race that was cancelled earlier this month with the sudden demise of RedRoseRaces.com.

Spinners will revive the criterium race in Grandview Heights, now called the Grandview Grand Prix. Online registration for the July 26 race will open on Tuesday, June 24.

The criterium, in the leafy neighborhood just north of Lancaster City, promises events ranging for those for professionals to category 5 beginners. Kids races - free of charge - will also be held.

Spinners, the largest team in the area, is offering $5 entry fee for the criterium for any racer who had pre-registered for the RedRoseRaces season. The team is also providing a portion of the proceeds to the Red Rose Rockets, a junior racing team that was part of RedRoseRaces. (Disclosure: my two sons constitute half of the Rockets team - B.H.)

The criterium was one of 16 races cancelled two weeks ago by David Butterworth, the controlling partner in RedRoseRaces.com. The announcement all but cleared the local racing calender for the remainder of the year. A week later, Butterworth revived three races under his own Pro-Am Cycling banner. The Christiana Criterium, which had been part of RedRoseRaces’ three-race Tour of Christiana, has been revived by Dave Felpel of Christiana Cycling.

The Spinners team, which is sponsored by the Spinners Cycling bike shop in Leola, also hosted last Sunday’s Cargas Criterium in the Greenfield Corporate Center and the SoYoCo Circuit Race in Southern York County in April.
