The Lancaster-based Cycle Smart team is nearing the end of its cross-country journey.
The team of two women and two men is expected to reach the Race Across America finish line in Annapolis, Md. on Thursday morning at 5:21 a.m., based on their average speed of 16.74 mph since starting the non-stop race in Oceanside, Calif. a week ago.
This morning, the team was crossing the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. They reached time station 46 at Grafton, WVa. at 10:31 a.m. They had 315 miles remaining.
Team Cycle Smart - consisting of local cycling advocate and Dream Ride founder Mike Ridgeway and teammates Robert Ansell, Denise Stone and Robin Smith - is solidly in fourth place among the “four-person mixed” teams competing in the race. The next closest team is 46 miles behind them, while the team now in third place is 66 miles ahead. The team’s progress can be tracked on the Race Across America website.
