Shirk’s junior named to national team

Kerry Werner Jr., a 17-year-old member of the local Shirk’s Racing Presented by Trek Bikes team, has been named as member of USA Cycling’s junior mountain bike cross-country team, it was announced this morning.

Werner, of Birdsboro, Berks County, received an automatic nomination to the national team after his victory at the Greenbrier Challenge on April 27. Werner won the junior X male, age 17-18, category of the race at Greenbrier State Park in western Maryland. He will represent the United States at the 2008 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy, June 17-22.

 Werner will join John Bennett, of El Cerrito, Calif., Robbie Squire, of Sandy, Utah, and Seamus Powell, of Round Top, N.Y., on the junior national team, USA Cycling announced.

Werner is also a Category 4 road racer. He finished third in a field of 42 starters in the Category 3/4 division of Red Rose Race’s Union Grove Road Race, in East Earl, Lancaster County, on May 17.
