Free bus rides for bicyclists during ‘Bike to work week’

May 6th, 2008 8:29 am · 0 comments

The Red Rose Transit Authority next week will recognize national “Bike to Work Week” by offering free bus rides for bicyclists and their bikes.

Any bicyclists wishing to travel “multi-modal” may put their bikes on a front rack of an RRTA bus and ride for free between Monday, May 12, and Friday, May 16. Normally, passengers who board Lancaster County’s public buses with a bike must pay the regular adult fare.

The racks on most RRTA buses carry two bikes. If the bus is not equipped with a rack, or the rack is already full, passengers may put their bike in the aisle inside the bus.

“Biking is good for your health and taking transit saves you money,” RRTA Executive Director Dave Kilmer said in a prepared statement.  “With gas prices so high, individuals are looking seriously at alternate modes of travel to get to work.  Biking and Transit are two good options separately or put together.”

“This is a great opportunity for people who have thought about riding their bicycles for commuting to get started,” said Mike Ridgeway, outreach coordinator of RRTA’s partner in the initiative, the Air Quality Partnership of the Susquehanna Valley.

Ridgeway is also director of Dream Ride Projects, an bicycling organization that promotes health and fitness through cycling. “They can bike for part of their trip and then hop on the bus for the other part.  It’s also good to know transit is an option for bicyclists in inclement weather,” Ridgeway said.

Anyone wishing more information, can call RRTA at 397-4246.  May is recognized as National Bike Month.  For more information about National Bike Month visit www.bikeleague.org.
