Racing is coming

It’s still cold outside, but the bicycle racing season is fast approaching.
The first big national race is the week-long Tour of California, which begins Sunday, at 4 p.m. Eastern time with 2.1-mile individual time trial. Check Velonews, Cyclingnews or the tour website for coverage.
This year’s tour, the nation’s largest race, will include 136 professional riders on 17 teams. They will race 650 miles, with the race ending Sunday, Feb. 24.
Locally, you have to wait another month for the first race. But don’t wait any longer to register. In fact, you may already be too late. The category 5 men’s race in the March 15th Strasburg Road Race is already closed. The 50-man field is already at 51. The 90-man Cat 4 field is nearly half full, with 44 riders registered by Friday afternoon. In total, 124 riders have already registered. On-line registration closes Thursday, March 13.

Mayor Rick Gray pulled the plug because the total cost to Lancaster City taxpayers would have approached $100,000 this year, with almost no private sponsorship.
I would have thought that a professional bicycle race would reimburse the local municipality for their costs, and perhaps provide some financial incentives. Instead, the race promoters were actually making increasing demands of local taxpayers for the "privilege" of hosting their very expensive bicycle race. |
