Bike map revisions

bike_map.jpgLancaster County’s bicycle map, created by the Lancaster County Planning Commission four years ago, is due for an upgrade.

Lauri Ahlskog, the county’s bicycle and pedestrian planner, is compiling text changes to be made to the map before reprinting.

Among those changes is the deletion of the former Crank bicycle shop in Ephrata and the movement of the Cycle Circle shop from North Queen Street to North Plum Street in Lancaster City. Bicycle shops will also be numbered to make them easier for map-users to find, Ahlskog said.

The county is planning to use nearly $10,000 for the update that remains unspent from another project. The new maps will be printed on tear-resistant paper. They should be ready by April for the start of the cycling season.

The existing bicycle maps use a color-coded system to show which roads are cycling-friendly, based on volume of motor vehicle traffic, width of shoulders and other factors.  The roads will not be updated in the new maps. A more comprehensive update is expected in about two years, she said.

There are probably only about 1,000 left of the original map, which is being distributed for free at local bicycle shops and tourist information centers. Initially, the county charged $3.18 for the map, including tax, to cover the printing cost.

Ahlskog said no decision has been made whether there will be a charge for the updated maps when they become available.
