Slipstream, the Colorado-based professional continental tean which hopes to join the ProTour ranks in 2009, is offering cycling fans the opportunity to design the team’s jersey for the coming year. The only catch: it’s got to be argyle.
The jersey will grace the backs of some of the United States’ best bicycle racers, including David Zabriskie, Christian Vande Velde, Tyler Farrar, Tom Danielson and Danny Pate.
The “Get in the Slipstream” contest is the first time in cycling history, a fan will design a professional team jersey. Contest information is at: http://slipstream.insightdesigns.com/fun.jerseyform.php
The contest winner will receive a full team kit and jersey autographed by the team members. A panel of judges, including Doug Ellis and Jonathan Vaughters, will select the top 5 jersey designs on September 21, and the public will then be invited to vote for the winning jersey.
With Tailwind Sports’ announcement last month that the Discovery team will disband at the end of the year, Slipstream became America’s best hope for international success. Team officials are hoping for a wild-card invitation to the Tour de France next year.
On Friday, in addition to the jersey competition, the team announced its roster for 2008. Other team riders are: David Millar, Christophe Laurent, Julian Dean, Magnus Backstedt, Maartijn Maaskant, Dan Martin, Chris Sutton, Trent Lowe, Ryder Hesjedal,Pat McCarty, Will Frischkorn, Jason Donald, Lucas Euser, Tom Peterson, Mike Friedman, Huub Duyn, Kilian Patour, Timmy Duggan and Steven Cozza.
