Shirk’s makes “Bicycling” magazine

Local bike shop Shirk’s is getting some attention from the largest bicycling magazine in the world.

“Bicycling,” which includes regular short articles on bike shops, has a short on Luke Shirk’s shop on pages 34 and 35 of the October edition. (I pulled mine out of the mailbox Thursday.)

Luke Shirk himself was apparently unwilling to talk to the magazine reporter. Mechanic Noah Mabry, a former BMX racer for the shop, was interviewed. http://www.bicycling.com/home/0,6608,,00.html?location=_*topnav* is the home page for Bicycling. The Shirk’s piece is not yet available on-line.

Although the Lancaster area is called “prime for biking,” Mabry does list the local fauna as one of the hazards.

“We had a guy come in who hit a squirrel,” Mabry says. “It totaled his entire bike. It got caught in the front wheel, hit the fork, and broke the frame in several places.” No existing parts could be put toward a new setup, the article states.

There you go. Consider yourself warned.

Shirk’s is at 1649 Ligalaw Road, East Earl, 445-5731.
