The “Buy Fresh, Buy Local” program is being launched this month with a series of activities. One of the first is a bicycle ride on Sunday morning, July 22.

buyfresh.gifThe ride leaves the Landis Valley Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, at Kissell Hill Road and Oregon Pike, and ends at the Hopewell Farm Center for Education and Conservation, 253 Elser Hill Road, in Elizabeth Township, north of Lititz. As the crow flies, the distance between the two points is about 12.3 miles. On backroads, the ride will be longer.

Buy Fresh, Buy Local is a national program of community-based non-profit organizations. It seeks to promote local farms and sustainable agriculture. In this area, the program links family farms, farmers’ markets, Community Supported Agriculture farms (CSA’s), u-pick farms, restaurants, grocers, caterers and bakers, bed & breakfasts, and other businesses that sell locally grown farm products.

The $30 registration for the ride includes lunch and beer at the Lancaster Dispensing Company. Pre-registration is required. Call 291-4293 for registration and information.

Ride check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. Riders will depart beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event is scheduled until noon.
