yes, more Penn State stuff…

April 27th, 2009 · No Comments

Penn State is apparently going to be sanctioned by the Rose Bowl for failing to meet contracual agreements regarding media obligations.
From a statement issued by the bowl:
There were two non-compliance matters.  One involved the failure to conduct a pre-game interview with the Game Broadcaster, as required by contract.  The other involved the failure to open […]

No, Penn State is not playing Pitt

April 20th, 2009 · No Comments

As several Sunday News readers have already pointed out, Pitt was included among Penn State’s 2009 non-conference opponents in my story in yesterday’s paper. It was of course a mistake, and a bizarre one. At one point the story did include a mention of Walt Harris, who was Pitt’s coach the last time it played Penn State, since he’s […]

Halftime (or, it’s over)

January 1st, 2009 · No Comments

Sanchez in the second quarter: 14-17 for 225 yards and two TDs. USC has 341 total yards at the half against what’s supposed to be one of the best defenses in the country.
The decisive matchup has been USC’s big receivers against Penn State’s little DBs. Didn’t see that coming, but neither did anyone else. What’s […]

JoePa forever and ever, amen

December 17th, 2008 · No Comments

At Rose Bowl media day Saturday, somebody asked Joe if there was any news on his job/contractural status. The standard Joe reply would have been on the order of (in squeaky, Brooklyn/Italian accent), “I don’t know… I’m not even thinking about that… You guys…”
But that wasn’t how he replied this time. He acknowleged that he […]

Devlin to transfer

December 10th, 2008 · No Comments

This came from Penn State at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

“Statement from Penn State Football

Sophomore quarterback Pat Devlin has informed Coach Joe Paterno that he intends to transfer. He will not participate with the team in the Rose Bowl. The Penn State football program wishes him well at his new school.”

Not a surprise, really, and […]

Rose Bowl presser

December 8th, 2008 · No Comments

This isn’t earth-shattering stuff, but I thought I’d share the transcript of Sunday’s Rose Bowl press conference. Let the gushing platitudes begin….

ROSE BOWL TELECONFERENCE
Penn State Coach Joe Paterno and USC Coach Pete Carroll
December 7, 2008

THE MODERATOR: On behalf of the Tournament of Roses, welcome to the Rose Bowl Game
Presented by Citi BCS conference call. For tonight’s […]

In the wake of the news…

December 6th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s a rare Saturday night in the office. SEC championship (and BCS semifinal) game about to start. In high schools, Wilson just lost 38-35 in triple overtime to Bethel Park in the state AAAA semis. Both teams scored TDs in first two OTs. In the second Wilson faked an FG and threw a pass that got […]

Plax, etc

December 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

As I said on The Low Post yesterday, Plaxico Burress is clearly an idiot. On the other hand, based on the media coverage of this you’d think Plaxico makes Pacman Jones look like Peyton Manning. Just a little over the top.
How many NFL players routinely take guns with them into clubs? Over the course of […]

Penn State-Indiana prediction

November 14th, 2008 · No Comments

Compared to last week (see below) this one is easy and dull. Indiana’s a bad team, and there’s no reason to believe they can pull together the mental/emotional stuff needed to go on the road and pull off the upset. Of the nine steps (or whatever the number is) of grief recovery, the Nittany Lions should […]

Penn State-Iowa prediction

November 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Coming at you live from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, were it’s snowing. And blowing. And colder than cold. There’s a downtown bar/restaurant/shop area in Iowa City (where the U. is) that would be really nice in normal conditions, but I nearly lost the will to live walking around there last night.
What this means for the football game: […]
