Welcome to the latest attempt to revive this blog, which, it’s fair to say, is now on life support, a victim of shocking neglect…. It’s not that I’m in any way “Old Media,” or anti-blog or any of that nonsense. I’m just too dim, unfocused, disorganized, lazy….
It’s been a fun read so far, hasn’t it?
The plan, which is barely a plan, is to have regular features appear weekly- “The Low Post”; a reprint of my Sunday News column; the obligatory collection of links, the e-mail of the week (I get some bizarre ones), and a couple oither things I hope to come up with (ideas welcome). This way even if I’m too lame to actually write stuff there should be new content showing up…..
I’m at the ballpark in York for the Barnstormers game here, the second of a day/night doubleheader. The BSers won game one 8-3, and are now 4-0 vs. the Revs, who at least for now plain stink. They’ve scored 28 runs fewer than the next-worst team offensie in the league, and allowed more than a half-run a game more than the next-worst pitching staff. Team OPS- .663. Team ERA- 5.14. Big comedown for a team that made the league playoffs last year….
Observations:
*I’m hardly the first to chime in on this, but if they’re not going to review the fair/foul call on Greg Dobbs’ shot down the first-base line that would have won the Phillies-Red Sox game last night, what’s the replay for? Judging from the umpire’s body language during his non-discussion with Charlie Manuel, and Charlie’s recounting of it afterward, I wonder if the ump in question - crew chief Jim Joyce - isn’t just a hard-ass on the whole question of replay.
Another thing- remember what a big deal it was when the NFL instituted replay and fiddled with the format in the early years? How is it that baseball has done it so quietly that we know nothing about it- Can managers ask for a replay? (Apparently not.) Is it entirely up to the ump’s discretion? (Apparently so.) Do they have different cameras angles from what we see on TV? (You got me)
*If you want to laugh, go see “The Hangover.” Even if you think you wouldn’t like that sort of thing, give it a shot. It’s just funny, from beginning to end.
*How’s this for a segue? - One of the best essays on the abortion issue I’ve seen. That’s not saying much, but still.
OK, I have to start covering baseball now. I pledge to at least try to be a real blogger. Billy Paultz deserves better.
