The guy’s been broadcasting college hoops since well before John Wooden quit coaching it. I don’t hate Packer, which evidently makes me a cult of one. Deadspin, in its’ understated fashion, today referred to him as ”The Archangel of Death.”
We can assume Phil Martelli and Dick Jerardi shared a long, tearful, celebratory hug. Maybe still are. And they aren’t the only ones.
Even though this year’s NCAA tournament was Packer’s best in years, the truth is this was long overdue. By the end America was just fiercely determined to be offended by this guy, as evidenced by the way people went nuts over Packer claiming the Kansas-North Carolina semifinal was over in the first half. Kansas was up at the time, I believe, 94-5.
This correspondent is not real excited about Clark Kellogg. If Greg Anthony replaces Kellogg, that’s probably a net gain, but Kellogg’s been dumbing his act down for the masses for a while now.
In a related story: Tonight, for I believe the first time ever, I completely blew off a sporting event I would otherwise have watched (the home run derby) entirely because of a broadcaster (Chris Berman). Just couldn’t handle the thought of it. Took the kids to see Hellboy.
Speaking of Packers, proud-to-be-a-friend-of-BPR Gordie Jones wonders who’ll retire first, JoePa or Brett Favre. Probably a no-brainer, since Joe reportedly told a recruit last week he’ll be coaching “Until God calls him back.” OK, maybe that’s not a no-brainer….
