The Nits have announced their football captains for next year, all seniors: DE Josh Gaines, S Anthony Scirrotto, C A.Q. Shipley and WR Derrick Williams.
This doesn’t matter much, but is slightly noteworthy for a couple reasons: 1. Scirrotto was arrested and suspended from the team early last season as the central figure in a much-publicized physical confrontation between football players and other Penn State students in the spring of 2007.
2. There was speculation that LB Sean Lee might be named a captain even though he tore a knee ligament in spring practice and will miss the entire 2008 season. Joe massaged that one by naming Lee an honorary captain.
All five are on track to graduate with or ahead of the class of 2008, according to Penn State’s sports-info department.
