… the Phillies blowing out Cole Hamels looks like genius compared to some of the stuff the Brewers have pulled lately. They have 14 pitchers on the roster. They have exactly three bench players, and one of them is a backup catcher (Mike Rivera) and the other two are lefthanded hitters (Craig Counsell and Tony Gwynn, Jr.).
In the Brewers-Phils game Wednesday, fans at Miller Park booed when starting pitcher Dave Bush was allowed to hit in the bottom of the sixth with a man on and the home team trailing 4-3. Then Jayson Werth led off the Phillies’ seven with a double, and Ned Yost took Bush out of the game anyway. Booooo.
Sunday’s game at Cincinnati was better. Tied 1-1 in the eighth, the Brewers got a man on with nobody out. Even though Yost had eight relievers available - four lefty, four righty - he let starter Yovani Gallardo hit for himself. Govani failed to advance the runner, and then left the game anyway. The Brewers lost when the Reds scored three in the 10th off Eric Gagne, who, despite an ERA of 8.20 (it’s now 8.31), was pitching for the fourth straight day.
Incredible. More provably and/or indefensibly stupid things are done in baseball than in all other major team sports combined.
