brain emptying

One staple of this blog in its original conception was supposed to have been to sit down late in the evening weekdays, with the family in bed, and sort of purge. For a variety of reasons (i.e. my disorganization and sloth) that hasn’t happened much. Tonight the domestic planets are aligned….

I’m doing a column for the Living section next Sunday. That’s enough with the laughter. Trolling for material, I watched “American Idol,” with my wife tonight. Again: stop laughing. They’re down to the final 12 contestants, so most of them were competent. It was Lennon/McCartney night, so the songs were good, at least on paper. The whole thing simply wasn’t bad enough to write about. And now my kids seem to think I sold out for cuddle-on-the-couch time with their mom. Best-laid plans, etc….

Back on earth, it’s a week full of mid-major conference tournaments on the Worldwide Leader’s family of networks… Butler is finishing off Cleveland State for the Horizon League title. Butler is 29-3, ranked 10th in the country and has been a national player for a few years now, but they just look extremely unathletic to me…. Don’t see a lot of legit Cinderellas this Madness. Look for the teams with the future pros, which is always a good idea…

That means, of course, that this is the real time to shine for most of the non-TV-show leagues… The Sun Belt final, Western Kentucky-Middle Tennessee, is on the deuce. WKU’s gonna win- it only seems like the Hilltoppers have been in the tournament almost every year of my life… Remarkably, there’s a Sun Belt team we know nothing about (South Alabama) that has 26 wins and is 25th in the RPI but lost in the semis of the conference tourney…. West Ky. wins… Oral Roberts, which ought to be called the Fightin’ Fundamentalists, is also dancin’ after winning whatever league its in….. the bubble is so big this year it’s a dirigible…

How many times a year are you taken aback by a score on ESPN’s scroll before realizing it’s a women’s game? For me it’s got to be 3-4 times a week for five months, year after year…. I think SportsCenter’s about to claim Notre Dame’s a viable NCAA darkhorse. I think they’re right. The Irish have a lot of positive markers…..

Got a few e-mails today from Hillary’s people, the first ‘08 election stuff I’ve seen. Must mean we’ll be inundated, in Pa., the next couple weeks. Chelsea will be at Lebanon Valley College tomorrow morning… We did the first edition of our new webcast, The Low Post, today. Went pretty well, I thought. We talked Phillies, went for 18 minutes. It still isn’t on the web. Maybe technical difficulties. Check back tomorrow…

Geez- a little hoop, a little blog-type activity, a little pinot grigio, and suddenly it’s almost midnight…. nighty-night.
