Three posts down there’s a bit on dumb baseball hall of fame arguments, two of which were made, in my view, against Tim Raines’ candidacy, by two venerable baseball writers, Tracy Ringolsby and Gerry Fraley.
A colleague has since written to inform me that he’s worked with Fraley, and considers him one of the best guys and sportswriters he’s ever been around.
More-than-duly noted. I wrote that Ringolsby and Fraley “don’t understand the sport they cover,” and I regret doing so. Baseball’s a big subject, and that statement’s a bit over-the-top. I am not an entrant in the endless blogosphere race to outsnark everybody else.
They still made indefensibly bad arguments. I’m not backing away from that.
In other news:
Welterweight boxer Kermit Cintron, who lives (part of the time) in Reading and trains (part of the time) at Nye’s Gym in Lancaster, won’t be able to fight again until March. Cintron retained his WBO world title with a 10th-round TKO of Jesse Feliciano Nov. 23, but severely damaged ligaments in his right hand in that fight.
That means Cintron has pulled out of a scheduled Feb. 2 unification fight with Paul Williams on HBO. Cintron (29-1) is ranked sixth among welterweights, and Williams third, by ESPN.com guru Dan Rafael. No. 1 in the division is the great Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
