Ruppie just paraded into the newsroom to announce that Sergio Garcia will never win a major, prompting a rant (that’s ironic, Ruppie prompting a rant from somebody else.)….
There are a very, very few golfers in history (Tiger, Nicklaus, maybe Bobby Jones in a far different time) who knew how to win majors without first learning how to lose them. For everybody else, it’s a necessary part of the process. Take a look at the careers of Hogan, Watson, Faldo, Mickelson for extreme examples.
Although his petulant, everybody’s-against-me side doesn’t help, Sergio is absolutely closer to eventually winning a major now than he was a week ago. It’s a process, and last week was a step forward.
There’s an overarching point: When you use the words “never” or “can’t” in sports, you’re almost always making a mistake.
Is anyone who has any sense surprised that Peyton Manning can win the big one? And how ’bout these people who thought the Yankees were done in June?
Done in June. Do these people ever actually watch sports?
