Schultz, DeLuca to play DI

January 27th, 2010 8:41 pm

Penn Manor senior goalie Pete DeLuca (right) and Manheim Township senior defender Austin Schultz (left) will continue their lacrosse careers at the Division I level.

DeLuca will play for Jacksonville, which begins lacrosse for the first time this season. DeLuca was an All-American last year and was named to the L-L League and District Three first team.

“He was one of the hardest working goalies in the state the past three years, and it is great to see his dedication pay off,” said former Comets’ coach Chris Snyder, who is now the Manager of Coaching Education for US Lacrosse. “I think if he takes that work ethic to Jacksonville he will be a goalie to watch at the next level. There is a lot to be said about hard work and Lacrosse IQ, and Deluca is by far the best player I have ever coached in both areas.”

A release from Jacksonville about its recruits can be found here.

Schultz will play for Bucknell, which competes in the Patrtiot League. Schultz was also named to the L-L League and District Three first team as a sophomore and junior.

Schultz has started for the Streaks since he was a freshman and has been a member of three District championships, two league championships and one state runner-up.

Schultz has accepted a ROTC scholarship and plans to major in pre-med.

The Bison won the Patriot League last year and are ranked 18th by Inside Lacrosse Magazine.

A look back….

Lacrosse this decade

Since I’ve only been covering lacrosse for three years I can only go off those years.
But….here are my biggest stories of this decade.

1. Franklin & Marshall two-time champs. Had the privilege of traveling to Salem Virginia this past spring to cover F&M win its second crown (helps when your brother is the SID at F&M). It was a great experience and awesome to see that level of lacrosse.
2. Tim Stratton sets national record. At the district final at Millersville, Stratton became the all-time national leading scorer. Great for the sport locally.
3. The passing of Ryan Weitzel. What an unbelievable, emotionally charged, game at Comet Field when PM took on L-S. Stands were packed and a lot of money was raised for cancer awareness. It was nice to see the entire lacrosse community come together to help the Weitzel family.
4. Township sweeps first-ever District Three championship. Last spring both MT teams knocked off L-L rivals to win the inaugural championship game.
5. MT vs. La Salle. The Streaks gave the Explorers all they could handle in the final Keystone Cup played at Comet Field. A mighty effort by MT considering they were playing a school that hand picks the best talent in its area.

Personally one of the things that stands out to me as a writer are the parents of the players. The majority of these parents are great and have been supportive of me as I try to take the sport to the next level with my coverage. Now there is minority that just doesn’t seem to get it. These are kids playing, not them, let them have fun and make memories. Writing nasty emails to sports writers is immature and rude and does nothing but give those parents some sort of vagarious satisfaction (you know who are). Sad if you ask me. “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”

The 00’s were good for lacrosse and I think the teens will be even better (especially now that soccer is moving to the fall).

Happy New Year

*Correction*

June 8th, 2009 5:54 pm

The All-Star tab is in both Monday’s Intell and New Era. I was told, so I told you, that it would be in the New Era on Monday and Intell on Tuesday. That’s how things work around here.
Run to your nearest grocery store or gas station to get one.

To answer “dowhatyoulike” post: I am not sure about the eEdition. I don’t think its usually viewable from there. I would just pony up the 50 cents. Eventually, color proofs will be on sale through the website. I’ll post that link once it becomes available.

Any other questions from anyone feel free to email me.
