Black Knights romp into PIAA semifinals

HEMPFIELD HOLDS OFF FRANKFORD 3-2 IN STATE QUARTERFINALS
JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
Another trip to Spring-Ford in Royersford for me on Thursday. Loving that 15-minute drive. And what a great baseball game — Hempfield rallies past (and then holds off) Frankford 3-2 in a PIAA Quad-A quarterfinal. Awesome, awesome game. Here’s my recap from Friday’s New Era:
ROYERSFORD – The […]

Hempfield survives, advances to state semis

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
ROYERSFORD – I’m still not quite sure how they pulled it off, but Hempfield’s baseball team squeaked past District 12 champ Frankford 3-2 in a PIAA Quad-A quarterfinal game Thursday afternoon at Spring-Ford High School.
All I can say is – wow.
One game after Hempfield scored five runs in the seventh to force extra […]

Lancaster Catholic, Hempfield moving on

Dave Byrne was on the baseball beat Monday afternoon, when two of the three Lancaster County teams who made the PIAA Tournament advanced — that would be Hempfield in Quad-A and Lancaster Catholic (the district champ) in Double-A. Warwick, the Quad-A district champ, was bounced in the first round. Here’s Dave’s recap from Tuesday’s New […]

Warwick topples Township, will take on Red Land in District 3 Quad-A baseball title game

Old friend Harold Ziegler was back on the baseball beat Wednesday at Wenger Field near Northern Lebanon High School, where Warwick took on Manheim Township and Hempfield squared off against Red Land in District 3 Quad-A baseball semifinal games. One Lancaster County team broke through to the finals — Warwick, which outslugged Township. Here’s Zig’s […]

I put together this preview capsule for the PIAA volleyball playoffs …

WHERE: Penn State University’s Ashenfelter Multisport Indoor Facility, near the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park. The tournament is usually held in Penn State’s Rec Hall, but that venue is under construction.
WHEN: Pool play on Friday in Double-A at […]

Garden Spot, Hempfield roar into state boys’ volleyball pool play Friday at Penn State

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
Stop No. 2 on my Berks County tour on Tuesday was Wilson High School, where Garden Spot took on Holy Redeemer in a PIAA boys’ Double-A first-round volleyball match. The Spartans, in States for the first time in the history of the program, played great, and will join Hempfield at Penn State on […]

The Great Escape

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
As I sit here posting this (still trying to figure out how in the world David Cook beat out David Archuleta, by 12 million votes, no less, despite my sure-fire prediction), I’m still not sure how Hempfield escaped with the District 3 Triple-A boys’ volleyball Pool B title Wednesday night at Central York […]

Houdini Act for Hempfield boys’ volleyball team

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
Just back from Central York High School (cool gym, by the way; that’s it on the left), where Hempfield’s boys’ volleyball team pulled off an all-timer.
Facing elimination from the District 3 Triple-A Tournament after dropping a 2-1 decision to Carlisle in their second pool-play match, the Black Knights knocked off host Central York […]

Hempfield’s girls’ win L-L powerlifting crown

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
Congrats to Hempfield’s girls’ powerlifting team (didn’t know there was such a thing, to be brutally honest with you), which won the Lancaster-Lebanon Powerlifting Championship last week at Donegal. The team is coached by Josh Rittenhouse.
Here’s the cool part:
All six Hempfield powerlifters are on the Black Knights’ girls’ basketball team.
Here’s how they fared:
Senior […]

Penn Manor claims L-L girls’ lax championship

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
The L-L League girls’ lacrosse season is in the books, and we have a familiar champ: Penn Manor, which won the crown for the third time in five years. The Comets knocked off Hempfield 15-12 Thursday night at Hempfield. It was the first time I’ve covered an event at Hempfield’s new turf complex […]

Two titles for Hempfield

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
BLACK KNIGHTS WIN LANCASTER-LEBANON LEAGUE BASEBALL, BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
It was quite a night for Hempfield on Thursday. The Black Knights captured a pair of league titles, and nearly pulled off the trifecta: Hempfield’s girls’ lacrosse team was in the L-L final but fell to Penn Manor.
Here’s where you can find our coverage from […]

Hempfield, CV are title-match bound

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
BLACK KNIGHTS, BUCKSKINS PUNCH TICKETS INTO L-L BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL FINALE
The L-L League boys’ volleyball Final Four was Tuesday night at Penn Manor. I had a nice, cozy seat in the press box to watch Hempfield and Conestoga Valley advance to Thursday’s title game. Can’t say I’m in love with the volleyball playoffs being […]

Conestoga Valley, Lancaster Mennonite will clash for L-L League girls’ soccer supremacy

Dave Byrne was in Manheim on Thursday night for the L-L League girls’ soccer semifinals — where Conestoga Valley and Lancaster Mennonite advanced to Saturday’s grand finale. CV will be defending its title. Here’s Dave’s report from Friday’s New Era:
Sometimes, it really is the way the ball bounces.
A pair of fortuitous caroms proved to be […]

‘Long’ ball helps E-town overtake Hempfield

Our very own Dave Byrne was in Landisville on Monday for some L-L League baseball action. In a Section 1-2 crossover game, Hempfield hosted Elizabethtown. Here’s Dave’s story from Tuesday’s New Era:
Hempfield hit the long ball Monday afternoon.
But Elizabethtown had a hit by Long, and that made all the difference.
First baseman Shane Long’s two-run single […]

New cast? No problem for Hempfield

JEFFREY REINHART jreinhart@LNPnews.com
Geez-o, there are seemingly a million spring sports. It’s getting tougher and tougher to keep up with all of them. Super L-L League boys’ volleyball matchup Thursday in Lititz, where Warwick and Hempfield (the last two unbeaten teams in Section 1) squared off. The Black Knights prevailed behind Ohio State recruit Shawn Sangrey, […]

Section 1 softball: Warwick is the team to beat

More L-L League softball preview caps for you … Phil Glatfelter takes a look at Section 1:
At first glance, it looks like Warwick’s softball team will have an easy time of it this season.
The Warriors have all but two starters back from last year’s squad, which went 20-5, won the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 title […]
