Podcasts: Barons’ Williams, Buller

November 30th, 2009 2:33 pm · 0 comments

A pair of audio Podcast interviews for you here …

First up, a sit-down with Manheim Central football coach Mike Williams, who earned his 300th career victory last Friday when his Barons topped Conrad Weiser 42-7 in a District 3 Triple-A semifinal game in Manheim.

After that, a chat with Central o-lineman Shaun Buller, who has fit in quite nicely with the Barons this season after transferring over from Elizabethtown. Buller and his o-line mates have been a major force, and those guys are a very big reason why Central will go for Triple-A gold Friday against Susquehanna Township.

Manheim Central coach Mike Williams - after state title win in 2003 // LNP photoMike Williams enjoyed the heck out of the career victory No. 300.

But when he finally caught his breath late last Friday night, he was already thinking about win No. 301 – which would give Manheim Central its 16th District 3 Triple-A championship.

After the Barons beat Conrad Weiser in the district semifinals, former Manheim Central players who were coached by Williams lined the field to honor their coach. Each class held up a placard with the number of victories they earned that season.

By the time they got to the 2009 crew, the 300 sign made its appearance.

It was a fitting celebration for a guy who has been at this 29 seasons. That number, in fact, floored him more than the magical 300 – which made Williams the 10th coach in PIAA history to hit that milestone number.

I chatted with Williams about 29 and 300 … and all that’s gone into it.

Manheim Central’s Shaun Buller // LNP photoShaun Buller heard all the talk – and it hasn’t bothered him one iota.

If nothing else, he used the banter about his transfer to Manheim Central for his senior year to fuel him. To toughen himself up. To push him. To motivate him.

End result – Buller has been a key cog on Manheim Central’s mammoth offensive line, which has blown open holes for a 1,000-yard back (bowling-ball Joe Gruber) and a scrambling quarterback (Justin Gorman) in a spread attack that calls for nimble trench guys to be on their toes.

That group includes center Blake Kreider (5-11, 210), guards Rob LaPorte (6-4, 310) and Joe Weaver (6-3, 310) and tackles Peter Ireland (6-3, 260) and Buller (5-10, 260).

I chatted with Buller about that group, about his transfer to Manheim Central and how all that went down, and about Coach Williams getting his 300th win and advancing to the district championship game.
