Lancaster Catholic senior QB closing in on state passing yardage record

LCHS QB Kyle Smith - 8,004 passing yards // LNP photoWith his 233-yard passing effort, Lancaster Catholic senior QB Kyle Smith cracked the ultra rare 8,000-yard club in the Crusaders’ 48-14 romp over Middletown in the District 3 Double-A semifinals last Friday night.

Smith has played in 11 games this season, and he’s completed 134-of-205 passes for 2,215 yards and 42 touchdowns against just four interceptions.

He has 8,003 passing yards in his career, and he’s just the second player in PIAA history to hit that milesone.

Smith has started 38 games for the Crusaders, and Lancaster Catholic is 33-5 in those games.

And for the rest of this season, Smith will not be pressured by Wilson Area senior QB Tyler Smith, who saw his outstanding career end last Friday night when Wilson Area fell to Allentown Central Catholic in the District 11 Triple-A playoffs.

Tyler Smith passed for 277 yards in his swan song, and the University of Maryland recruit finished his career with 7,998 yards, good for third on Pennsylvania’s all-time list.

Kyle Smith has former Downingtown East QB Pat Devlin squarely in his radar, and he has an excellent shot to pass the former Penn State QB Friday, when Lancaster Catholic takes on Delone Catholic in the District 3 Double-A championship game.

Here’s the list …

Pat Devlin, Downingtown East – 8,162 yards.
Kyle Smith, Lancaster Catholic – 8,003 yards.
Tyler Smith, Wilson Area – 7,998 yards.
D.J. Lenehan, Wilson Area – 7,762 yards.
Evan Kraky, Lakeland – 7,447 yards.
Ron Powlus, Berwick – 7,342 yards.
Pat Bostick, Manheim Township – 7,260 yards.
Chad Henne, Wilson – 7,071 yards.

Kyle Smith needs …
160
yards to pass Pat Devlin.
