Beavers’ senior standout will play basketball for the Red Flash
From the first time she stepped onto the basketball court inside Lebanon Catholic High School, Hailey Carangelo knew what she wanted to do.
Play basketball for a Division I college.
The Beavers’ high-scoring senior got her wish.
Carangelo, who will enter her final season next month with 1,092 career points for the 15-time District 3 Single-A champs, has accepted a full athletic scholarship offer from St. Francis University in Loretto.
She will play hoops and study education at St. Francis.
The Red Flash competes in the Northeast Conference, and St. Francis reached the conference championship game last season, falling to Sacred Heart.
Carangelo averaged 17.6 points a game and drilled 34 3-pointers in her junior season for the Beavers, who went 17-9 and won their 15th District 3 Single-A title before bowing out to Bishop Carroll in the first round of States.
Carangelo, who is ninth in program history in career points – 55 points behind her mom, by the way – picked St. Francis over Mount St. Mary’s. She also considered Rider.
She will see plenty of familiar faces when she lands at St. Francis next year:
Former Penn Manor standout Kelsey Caruthers, former Cedar Crest standout Allison Smith and former Trinity standout Allison Daly – one of Carangelo’s former AAU buddies – all play for the Red Flash, which is coached by former Penn State player Susan Robinson-Fruchtl.
Carangelo will also be part of a dynamic recruiting class for St. Francis, which also landed All-State players Alli Williams from Bishop Guilfoyle in Altoona, and 6-1 shot-blocker Rebecca Keegan from Valley View in Archbald.
Williams led Guilfoyle to the Single-A state title last season.
Keegan blocked 22 shots in a game last season.
I caught up with Carangelo after she made her announcement at Lebanon Catholic High School the other night. We chatted about her decision, about her recruiting trail, about the upcoming season, and about what the future might hold.
