L-L League football ‘3 Stars’ for Week 9

Plenty of top individual efforts to choose from in Week 9 for ‘3 Stars’ this week.

Had to actually mull some things over before narrowing it down to three.

After making a list and checking it twice, here’s who made the final cut …

Solanco’s B.J. Enck // LNP photoB.J. Enck, Solanco – What a night on both sides of the ball for the Golden Mules’ senior RB/DB, who helped Solanco ax Garden Spot 41-7 for the Mules’ third win in a row. On defense, Enck picked off three passes – including a pick-6, when he took an interception 35 yards to the house to cap the scoring – and on offense he carried 13 times for 214 yards (that’s 16.5 yards per carry, by the way) and he had two touchdown runs for Solanco, which improved to 3-3 in Section 2 and 5-4 overall. Enck’s TD runs covered 15 and 68 yards. Solanco remained right on the bubble in the District 3 Triple-A chase. Looks like the Mules will have to win at home against Cocalico (4-2, 7-2) on Friday and get help from some other teams. Keep your fingers crossed, Quarryville. Enck to Lancaster Newspapers after the Garden Spot game: “I love my line. They do such a good job every week. I might need to take them all out to dinner.”

Lampeter-Strasburg’s Chad Frey // LNP photoChad Frey, Lampeter-Strasburg – The Pioneers’ speedy senior not only found the end zone five times in Lampeter-Strasburg’s 42-7 victory over Northern Lebanon, but he scored three different ways. Frey carried nine times for 144 yards (a nifty 16.0 yards per pop) and he had three touchdown runs, covering 29, 34 and 68 yards, respectively. Frey also returned a punt 51 yards for a TD, and he picked off a pass and took it 25 yards to the house for another score as L-S (5-1, 6-3) won its fourth game in a row and remained right in the thick of the District 3 Triple-A chase. That’s back-to-back 144-yard outputs for Frey, who also had a big night in Week 8 against Pequea Valley. Frey to Lancaster Newspapers after the Northern Lebanon game: “I don’t really care about my individual statistics. As long as we get the win I’m happy.”

Elizabethtown’s Jared Danneker // LNP photoJared Danneker, Elizabethtown – In what will go down surely as the wackiest L-L League football game this season, Danneker played the starring role when it counted most in the Bears’ wild 35-34 triple-overtime victory against Ephrata. Locked in a 14-all draw after regulation, Danneker slammed in from 6 yards to give Elizabethtown its first TD in the overtime. Two overtimes later, Danneker plunged in from the 1 to give the Bears a 35-28 lead. Undaunted, Ephrata scored in its third OT try when Jeremy Franck hit Lance Kopp for a 9-yard score. But Danneker saved the day for Elizabethtown when he flew in and blocked Chris Fassnacht’s potential game-tying extra point. Danneker to Lancaster Newspapers after the Ephrata game: “Honestly, I think we were just playing on adrenaline and heart. We weren’t going to give up and we knew it. It was nerve-racking, but we knew we had a job to do, and we got it done. It was probably one of the most satisfying experiences I’ve ever had.”
