L-L football rankings - post Week 7

Excruciatingly tough week since two games got pushed back to Monday night, so I’m on tilt at the moment.

So this week’s rankings will be a bit of an abbreviated edition.

Can’t go any further without reminding you that I do these for fun; sorry gang: no magic formula.

So here are my top 5 through Week 7, with Week 8 right around the corner …

1 – Manheim Central (4-0 Section 2, 7-0 overall; last week – 1st) – Barons nailed down my top spot yet again. And why not? Only unbeaten team in the L-L League. Alone in first place in Section 2. Top-ranked defense in the L-L League with three shutout victories, including a 36-0 whitewash over Conestoga Valley in the rain last Friday night. Ranked in every state poll out there. And this Spread Gun O is a handful. UP NEXT: Friday at Elizabethtown (2-2, 4-3). I will be blogging live from that game at LancSports.com.

2 – Lancaster Catholic (4-0 Section 3, 6-1 overall; last week – 2nd) – Crusaders remain in the 2-hole after walloping Northern Lebanon 59-17 Monday night behind a gnarly two-pronged attack: Kyle Smith passed for 263 yards and 5 TD (3 to Tyler Purvis) and Jordan Stewart rushed for 179 yards and 2 TD. Catholic coping with some nagging injuries; when the whole squad gets back healthy, watch out. UP NEXT: Friday at home vs. Columbia (0-4, 0-7).

3 – Wilson (4-0 Section 1, 6-1 overall; last week – 3rd) – My top 3 remained intact after the Bulldogs blasted cross-town rival Reading 61-19. That’s a lot of points in any game; imagine putting up 61 on a rainy night? Great effort by Wilson, including a whopper night by RB Kriss Brown, who continues to charge up the rushing charts. He went off for 229 yards and 5 TD for the Bulldogs, who took over sole possession of first place in Section 1 when Penn Manor picked off Manheim Township. UP NEXT: Friday at Manheim Township (3-1, 5-2). Keith Schweigert blogging live at LancSports.com if you can’t make it.

4 – Penn Manor (3-1 Section 1, 6-1 overall; last week – not ranked) – Comets join my top 5 after topping Manheim Township 28-18 and knocking the Blue Streaks out of a first-place tie with Wilson. It also leaves Penn Manor in a two-way tie for second place with Township, and the Comets can snap that tie with a win and a Township loss to Wilson on Friday. So plenty going on in the Section 1 chase. Stay tuned. Terrific balance for the Comets. And they sure have bounced back nicely since the Week 5 loss at Reading, eh? UP NEXT: Friday at home vs. Warwick (2-2, 4-3).

5 – Elco (3-1 Section 3, 6-1 overall; last week – not ranked) – Decided to put the Raiders back in my top 5 after they dismantled Pequea Valley 41-0 to put the Week 6 loss at Lampeter-Strasburg in the rearview mirror. QB Arron Achey and RB Justin Weatherholtz both ran wild and Elco held the Braves’ high-powered O in check to remain in a three-way tie for second place in Section 3, a game behind Lancaster Catholic. Elco, L-S and Annville-Cleona are all 3-1 in the section, and Elco is at Catholic in Week 10. Still really like this team, gang. UP NEXT: Friday at home vs. Annville-Cleona (3-1, 3-4) for the Raiders’ 40-years-of-football celebration.

"View From The Pit!"
Here are my week 7 team rankings.
1) Manheim Central. Running through CV last week on all cylinders as the Barons won 36-0. They have knocked off District 2 AA leader and Quad A #3 District points leader as well. MC has a "date" with Etown this week. Good thing Mike Williams doesn't hold a grudge or the '99 Solanco victory could look like a nailbiter compared to this one.
2)Wilson . Kris Brown is really on fire for the Bulldogs as of late. I think if he was used more early on they could have possibly been the #1. Wilson looks to make a deep run in D3 but must take it one game at a time as they sometimes tend to lose their focus.
3)Lancaster Catholic. Powerful, speedy and have a great qb who will lead them deep into the state's deepest treacherous waters.Purvis is having a monstrous year for the Crusaders . Nobody will give them a game the rest of this regular season.Columbia is up next and unless the bus driver gets lost the Tide doesn't have a prayer. Then they finish up with Annville-Cleona and a highly anticipated matchup with Elco which should be a pretty good game but I think LC has too much talent and depth.9-1 and all the records will fall for K-Smith with those creampuffs in weeks 8 &9. As he needs 5 more tds and 1400 more yds. He'll get half of those yards against those 2 and he'll throw for 5 in the first half against Columbia.
.4)Penn Manor. They have Warwick who plays teams awfully tough but the Comets should prevail. PM should get a home field playoff game with an 8-2 record which they should get with just a loss to Wilson on the horizonat Wilson and then finish with a gimmee at Cedar Crest.
5)Cocalico. They had one setback to Wilson a few weeks back but they are pretty much unstoppable on offense and a very quick defense to boot. I know teams don't want to face these Eagles come playoff time.I'd love to see them matchup with Susquehanna Twp. or West York. They disposed of Sus.Twp pretty easy last year.Hartman is just a bulldozer who will eclipse most of all the Eagles all-time rushing records by the time this season is completed.Garden Spot is next,CV and Solanco . Should put the Eagles at 9-1.

Excellent picks snake. I like the fact that you have Wilson above Catholic. Also like the fact that you have Cocalico in there. I remember people talking about Wilson last year and how they were going to lose all of those starters and this would be a rebuilding year. If you look at their starting roster, 20 of the 22 starters are seniors. I would love to have a "rebuilding year" with that kind of talent and experience.....

Hey Jeff...since this is all for fun, I think that you and this snake guy should go head to head the rest of the season and see how your picks stack up. Whaddya say????
