Golden Mules’ rugged RB chats after win over Oxford
Solanco has one of the funkiest offenses in the L-L League.
Golden Mules’ coaches call it the Spread Wing-T, and it’s a handful to prep for.
Solanco’s quarterback is in the shotgun 99 percent of the time – hence the spread term – but the offense still has Wing-T tendencies, often times with three running backs lined up around the QB, and usually people going in motion on pretty much every play – more spread stuff.
Like any good Wing-T attack, a good, rugged, grind-it-out fullback is a must.
Solanco has a couple of guys like that, which is a bonus.
One of them is 5-9, 190-pound senior battering ram Ryan Kutz, who picked up the tough yards last Saturday night in Solanco’s 28-19 non-league win over Oxford in Quarryville.
It was the Mules’ second win in a row, and gave Solanco some nice momentum going into its Section 2 opener Friday at Elizabethtown – the team the Mules’ shared the 2007 Section 2 title with.
So expect the pads to be popping in that one.
Kutz, as mentioned, had a big night against Oxford, grinding out 106 yards on 14 carries. And his 1-yard plunge capped Solanco’s scoring output in the second half.
Kutz and John Fisher (15-108, 2 TD) both eclipsed 100-plus yards against Oxford, and Solanco pounded out 288 yards on the ground in all – running behind a stout line that is picking up speed as the section opener approaches.
I caught up with Kutz after the Oxford game, and we talked about Solanco’s balanced backfield – leading rusher B.J. Enck missed most of Saturday’s game after suffering an early injury, but the team didn’t miss a beat – about the Mules’ rugged line, and about the team’s two-game winning streak heading into E-town.
