Barons’ two-way standout chats about Friday’s big game at Lancaster Catholic

Manheim Central’s Joe Gruber // LNP photoManheim Central unveiled its funky Spread Gun offense this season.

Quarterback Justin Gorman is in the shotgun 99 percent of the time, and he’s often flanked by four or even five wideouts and plenty of empty backfield sets.

But when the Barons turn to the ground game, they have a grinder in senior Joe Gruber.

A fullback-type who also has breakaway speed, Gruber is known for barreling through holes and dragging would-be tacklers a couple of extra yards once he gets into the secondary.

And on defense, he lines up on the edge opposite All-State pick Dakota Royer, forming quite a 1-2 punch OLB/DE spot for the Barons, who will take their 2-0 record and a No. 5 state-ranking on the road to Rossmere Stadium Friday night when Central visits 2-0 Lancaster Catholic, which No. 1 in the state in Double-A.

Gruber, as you can imagine, is quite psyched for the game. He says he and his Barons’ teammates would love some payback from last year’s game – won by Catholic, 21-8, on Central’s field.

I chatted with Gruber about Friday’s matchup. Hear what he had to say here.
