It took a little longer than suspected, but Week 2 is finally in the books.
That means another installment of ‘3 Stars’ … and here are the three top performances I picked out from Week 2 …
Arron Achey, Elco – The Raiders’ senior QB completely torched Pine Grove in Elco’s 43-12 non-league victory on Saturday night. Check out this stat line – 7-of-12 for 256 yards (that’s 36.6 yards per completion, by the way) and four touchdown passes. He also had 12 keepers for 55 yards. And on D, from his safety/OLB spot, Achey made seven tackles – four solos. And he also returned a punt for 14 yards. Achey spread the wealth on his TD tosses, going up top to four different receivers – 75 yards to Brendan Auman, 56 yards to Eric Ondo, 27 yards to Bryan Bowman and 54 yards to Tyler George, as Elco improved to 2-0 heading into Friday’s Bologna Bowl at home against cross-town rival Lebanon.
Brian Sourber, Manheim Township – The Blue Streaks’ senior RB-LB had a lights-out game against Red Lion last Friday night. Unfortunately it was in a losing effort. But Sourber was absolutely everywhere. On offense, he carried 16 times for 139 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns. He also had two catches for 37 yards, including a 32-yard TD reception. On special teams Sourber returned five kickoffs for 156 yards (31 yards per return). Calculator please: 342 yards of total offense. And on defense, he made five solo tackles, assisted on another, had a sack, forced a fumble, broke up a pass and blocked a kick – just for laughs. “Also sold hot dogs at halftime,” Township coach Mike Melnyk joked. Red Lion won the game 31-21. But Sourber’s fingerprints were all over the place.
Leonard Williams, Conestoga Valley – The Buckskins’ senior WR-DB played large from his cover-corner spot in CV’s thrill-a-minute 9-7 win at Warwick. Having to cope with Matt Rissinger, the league’s leading receiver with nine catches in Week 1, Williams spent the night on a wet field chasing the Warriors’ weapon all over the place. His perseverance paid off with a pair of interceptions, including the game-clincher late in the fourth quarter. Trailing by 2 and with time running out, Warwick QB Jordan Donmoyer was marching his team down the field for a potential go-ahead TD. And on Warwick’s last-gasp effort, Donmoyer found Rissinger open on the sideline in front of Warwick’s bench. Rissinger dove for the ball but the slippery pigskin squirted off his hands and he ended up kicking the ball up in the air – directly to Williams, who was also making a diving stab for the pass directly behind Rissinger. When Williams came down with it with 20 seconds to go, it sealed CV’s second straight win to open the season – that after back-to-back 1-9 campaigns.
