Eagles’ veteran QB/DB talks about Week 1 victory over L-S
When it came to Cocalico football, the talk of the preseason was about third-year returning senior QB Matt Carty and his prowess at the helm of the Eagles’ Veer option attack.
Carty gained the rep around the league as a pitch-man extraordinaire – knowing when to pitch, knowing when to keep and knowing when to pass while running Cocalico’s O.
He showed all of those skills last Friday night in the Eagles’ season opening 34-21 non-league win at Lampeter-Strasburg.
Carty completed 6-of-12 passes for 108 yards, including a TD toss to Kyle Rissell, which tied the game late in the first half. He also called his own number 16 times for 188 yards rushing and another score. And when he handed the ball off to Austin Hartman, Cocalico’s junior fullback slugged it out for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
With Carty at the wheel, Cocalico pounded out 320 rushing yards and gained 20 first downs on opening night.
I caught up with Carty after the game, and we talked about the importance of winning in Week 1, especially on the road against a quality opponent, about his prowess running Cocalico’s offense, and about where he and the Eagles go from here.
