It’s back … my weekly ‘3 Stars’ segment, when I choose my top three performances from the past L-L League football weekend.

All kinds of candidates in Week 1. But when I sorted through my list and checked it twice, here’s who I came up with …

Wilson’s Tyler Beck // LNP photoTyler Beck, Wilson - The Bulldogs’ punishing senior tight end had a memorable season debut with four catches for 116 yards - and three of those grabs went for touchdowns in Wilson’s 42-7 romp over archrival Governor Mifflin. Beck, a bruising 6-3, 230-pounder, had TD catches of 42, 12 and 35 yards, respectively, from QB Zach Zweizig, who completed a cool 13-of-16 passes for 210 yards and four touchdowns. He complete his first 10 attempts in the game. Beck is just one of three full-time contributors back from last year’s team, which went 14-1 and reached the state semifinals.

CV’s Kevin Kelley // LNP photoKevin Kelley, Conestoga Valley - The Buckskins’ scrappy 5-8, 175-pound senior I-back shook, rattled and rolled Hempfield’s defense for 229 yards (on 25 carries) and three touchdowns in CV’s 28-10 win. His TD runs covered 16, 10 and 62 yards, respectively, as the Buckskins got off to a much-needed 1-0 start after going 1-9 last season. Kelley rushed for 1,030 yards last season; he’s well on his way to crushing that mark. CV’s win was also the first for new coach Tom Nichols, the former Buckskins’ player and assistant coach who was making his debut after replacing Gerad Novak. At one point in the second half, Kelley had 18 carries in a row vs. Hempfield.

E-town’s Mitch Weidman // LNP photoMitch Weidman, Elizabethtown - The Bears’ lightning-quick 6-2, 210-pound senior had a standout game against McCaskey in coach Mike Cottle’s debut with E-town. Weidman carried 13 times for 138 yards and had a pair of touchdowns runs, and he also returned a kickoff 97 yards for a third TD. Weidman’s TD runs covered 1 and 41 yards, respectively, and his scores helped the Bears roll past the Red Tornado 41-27 in David Given’s debut as McCaskey’s coach.
