Cruz twins from Warwick will continue hoops careers together in D-II
We interrupt the end of your summer vacation and the lead-up to fall sports for this L-L League girls’ basketball note.
Yeah, girls’ basketball. In August.
Warwick grads – and speed-demon twin sisters – Ana and Carmen Cruz have accepted full athletic scholarship offers to play basketball for Division II Harcum College in Bryn Mawr.
Harcum competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association, and the Bears will have a new coach, Sheila DiNardo, when the 2009-2010 season starts later this year.
Harcum will also have a pair of speedy guards in the Cruz twins, who had standout careers for Warwick.
This past season, Ana led the Warriors in scoring (13.2) and she drilled 18-pointers, while Carmen paced Warwick with 25 3-pointers and averaged 7.4 points a game.
Ana finished her career with 772 points and 63 3-pointers, while Carmen finished her career with 412 points and 76 3-pointers.
“They are great kids who worked very hard,” said Matt Reber, who coached the Cruz twins during their varsity days with Warwick. “I’m happy they are getting a chance to prove themselves at the next level academically and athletically.”
Harcum went 12-18 overall last season – the Bears’ first losing season since women’s basketball was resurrected at the college in 2005.
