It didn’t take long for David Given to start putting his own mark on McCaskey’s football program.
Hired on May 19 to replace Scott Feldman, who resigned his post after 11 seasons on the Red Tornado’s sideline, Given has already made a major switch – and it has nothing to do with player personnel.
When McCaskey hits the field for its season opener against Elizabethtown on Sept. 4, the Tornado will be sporting new uniforms, featuring a shiny new logo on their helmets.
Given decided to shed the ‘M’ on McCaskey’s helmets. The ‘M’ will be replaced by the familiar tornado logo.
Check out the cool photo on the left, showing off the new helmet logo.
For home games, the Tornado will wear all black uniforms – black pants and black jerseys … another new tweak.
So why did Given ditch the ‘M’ on the helmets?
“The ‘M’ reminded everyone around here of too many bad things from last year,” said Doug Williams, who edits the team’s Web page, mccaskeyfootball.com. “Miscues. Mistakes. Missed opportunities. Mediocrity. And anything else bad that starts with an M.”
McCaskey went 0-10 last season, the Tornado’s first winless season since 1975. McCaskey also allowed 374 points last season – the most the Tornado yielded in a season since 1969.
Given is hoping a new look might be the first step in helping to get the Tornado back on the winning track.
