Penn State junior wideout chats after Blue/White Game
UNIVERSITY PARK – If you’re a Penn State football fan, you’ve heard the names a gazillion times.
Derrick Williams. Jordan Norwood. Deon Butler.
Those three wideouts will be awfully tough to replace.
But former Manheim Central standout Graham Zug, a junior-eligible who went from walk-on to scholarship athlete, is hoping to make the transition a little easier.
After catching 11 passes for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns last season, Zug is hoping to be one of the Nittany Lions’ top go-to guys this season.
It was quite a Blue/White Game weekend for Zug, who caught four passes for 62 yards – including a 19-yard TD grab – and he was presented the Red Worrell Award for “exemplary conduct, loyalty, interest, attitude and improvement,” during spring practice.
Zug also got a huge thumbs-up from senior QB Daryll Clark, who praised the former Baron after the Blue/White Game.
“I have full confidence in Graham,” Clark said. “He’s proven to the coaches and to the team that he’s going to be one of our top playmakers. When Derrick, Deon and Jordan were here, Graham was right there with those guys – working on getting better so that when he’s called upon, he could be just as good, if not better, than those guys.”
Zug will slip into Norwood’s spot in Penn State’s offense.
“Graham fits that mold perfectly,” Clark said.
I caught up with Zug in Beaver Stadium’s Media Room after the Blue/White Game. As you can imagine, with Williams, Norwood and Butler gone, a lot of different reporters wanted to bend Zug’s ears about the wideout corps. So plenty of topics were covered in this media session – like Zug’s thoughts on Penn State’s quarterbacks, the state of the team, and, of course, the wideouts, and how they’re coping with life without Williams, Norwood and Butler.
