Beavers’ soph chats about her battle against heart ailment
Erin Walker noticed the pain in December.
And it just wasn’t any other pain.
This was a chest pain, specifically in her heart.
Scary stuff for a 15-year-old sophomore.
After a trip to Hershey Medical Center, Erin, the first player off Lebanon Catholic’s bench and a key contributor to the Beavers’ attack this season, was told blood flow from her heart to her lungs was being restricted, and it was a disorder in her heart she’d had since birth.
Erin got that news just last Thursday.
Her basketball season? Over.
Her softball season later this spring? Ditto.
But here’s the incredibly great news: She will have a surgical procedure in the very near future to repair the blockage in her heart, and she’s expected to have a 100 percent full recovery – and be back on the basketball court as early as this coming summer.
Erin can tell her story a heck of a lot better than I can write it.
So I caught up with her after Lebanon Catholic won its 15th District 3 Single-A championship Thursday night with a 40-30 victory over Greenwood.
While she couldn’t play, Erin was in uniform – and right in the middle of the celebration pile. And when I tracked her down outside the locker room, she was cradling her gold medal very tightly.
