Hempfield senior option QB commits to Navy
He was one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the L-L League last season.
Hempfield senior Jarvis Cummings did a lot of damage with his right arm, and especially with his feet.
The Black Knights’ option specialist passed for 900 yards, rushed for 1,189 yards, accounted for 30 total touchdowns and spearheaded a rejuvenated offense that cranked out more than 330 yards a game.
Cummings was voted First-Team All-Section 1 for his efforts under center last fall.
Cummings piloted Hempfield to a 5-2 mark in the Section 1 race and into the District 3 Quad-A playoffs, where the Knights dropped that funky last-minute 41-38 decision to high-flying Muhlenberg in the first round.
But it was a bounce-back season of sorts for Hempfield, which went 4-6 in 2007.
Cummings was a hot commodity on the blue-chip recruiting market. He spent last summer bopping around from camp to camp, showing off his speed and athleticism.
And before he knew it, Cummings had a big pile of offers on the table in front of him.
His final answer?
Navy – an option-oriented program that was looking for an option-oriented QB.
Cummings made his verbal commitment to Midshipmen coach Ken Niumatalolo this past weekend.
I chatted with Jarvis about his decision to pick Navy, what he hopes to bring to the program, about joining the military and about the uber rivalry with Army.
