Smith, Jankowski earn First-Team honors; Schmalhofer, Persch named Second-Team

Four Lancaster-Lebanon League football players made the Double-A Associated Press All-State Team, including three players from District 3 champ and state semifinalist Lancaster Catholic. Here are their bios and some stats …

QB Kyle Smith, Lancaster Catholic – Shared First-Team All-State honors with West Catholic QB Curtis Drake, who is headed to Penn State. Drake actually earned the Player of the Year nod in Double-A, but shared First-Team honors with Smith, who completed 181-of-278 passes for 3,193 yards and 42 touchdowns against just five interceptions, while leading Catholic to a 13-2 record. He shattered every single-season record in Catholic’s books, and will take aim at the state record for career passing yards and career TD passes next season. Drake and West Catholic topped Smith and the Crusaders in the Eastern final. Smith was a Second-Team pick last year.

WR Travis Jankowski, Lancaster Catholic First-Team selection at wide receiver after catching 57 passes for a school-record 1,192 yards and a school-record 20 TD grabs. He put up those numbers despite missing two games with an injury early in the season.

DE Nick Schmalhofer, Lancaster Catholic Second-Team selection at defensive lineman had an outstanding season in the trenches for the Crusaders, who won the Section 3 title with a 7-0 mark. He led the team in sacks, and he has scholarship offers in his back pocket from Appalachian State, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Stony Brook, Wofford and Western Carolina.

WR Sean Persch, Pequea Valley – A repeat Second-Team All-State honor for Persch, who caught 71 passes for 1,152 yards and six touchdowns for the Braves, despite missing a pair of games after surgery for torn ligaments in his hand. Persch, who played the rest of the season with a taped up club on his hand, finished his career with 164 receptions for 2,444 yards and 22 TD catches.
