Crusaders’ coach breaks down 37-14 loss to West Catholic in state semifinals
Bruce Harbach’s worst fears came true.
Lancaster Catholic’s football coach said over and over last week that he was mucho concerned with West Catholic’s speed game.
He felt pretty good about all the areas. But the Burrs’ speed … yeah, that was going to be a problem.
Turns out Harbach was right – West Catholic had athletes who could flat run. And the Burrs’ backfield was as-advertised, as all three kids who had more than 1,000 rushing yards coming into the game all delivered, particularly QB Curtis Drake, who ran for 183 yards (15.3 per carry), including a back-breaking 92-yard TD sprint.
Ray Maples added 112 yards and Rob Holloman rushed for 79 for West Catholic, which piled up 390 rushing yards in all and topped the Crusaders 37-14 in a PIAA Double-A state semifinal game.
Excellent season for Lancaster Catholic, which finished 13-2 overall with an L-L League Section 3 title and District 3 Double-A championship. The 13 wins were most in school history, and it was deepest any Lancaster Catholic football team went in the postseason.
And a ton of Crusaders’ players are back next season.
