Playing defense isn’t supposed to be fun, is it?

Offense is the place to be – with the football in your hands, following your lead blockers all the way to the end zone. Scoring touchdowns. Throwing the football. Catching passes.

Yeah, that’s the fun stuff.

I’ve never seen a team enjoy playing defense like Wilson.

Those 11 guys hate giving up touchdowns – let alone first downs.

They all have each other’s backs, and they swarm and swarm and swarm and hit you and hit you and hit you. They’ve made life miserable for every offensive coordinator over the last 14 weeks.

Wilson is tops in the L-L League in total team defense, and the Bulldogs, incredibly, still have not surrendered 1,000 rushing yards this season – in 56 quarters of football.

Rodney Hill is a key cog on Wilson’s defensive unit. The senior tackle is hole-plugger and a big hitter, and for a 6-foot, 275-pounder, he can scoot.

I caught up with Hill after Wilson bludgeoned Cumberland Valley 35-7 in the District 3 Quad-A championship game last Saturday night in Hersheypark Stadium.

As you can imagine, he and his teammates were pretty giddy, so he was at a loss for words a couple of times – odd for Hill, who is a big talker, on top of being a big hitter.

We chatted about the big win, about Wilson’s stifling defense, about the seven first-half turnovers Cumberland Valley coughed up, and about the Bulldogs’ journey, and where it goes from here.
