Bulldogs’ big hitter chats about win over Cumberland Valley
According to Wilson’s official varsity football roster, Jordan Holbert is 5-7 and weighs 165 pounds.
Not the most imposing linebacker you’ve ever come across right?
Wrong.
This kid will stick you. And that’s exactly what he did last Saturday night in the District 3 Quad-A championship game in Hersheypark Stadium. Holbert decked a Cumberland Valley back early in the first quarter, forcing one of the Eagles’ (gasp) seven first-half turnovers.
Holbert recovered the fumble and Wilson was on its merry way, bolting to a 27-0 lead the half and a 35-7 victory. Another week, another Mercy Rule win for the Bulldogs, who have now Mercy Ruled 11 of their last 12 opponents.
Holbert’s hit got the ball rolling, and the fun never stopped for Wilson, which won its fourth District 3 Quad-A championship.
I caught up with Holbert after the game, and we chatted about his big hit, about Wilson turning Cumberland Valley over an incredible seven times in the first half (and eight overall), about the ride the Bulldogs’ have been on, about going to the state playoffs – oh yeah, about his cool Mohawk haircut, of which the top part he hasn’t cut since August.
Ah yes, superstition.
