Crusaders’ signal-caller chats about triumph over Mount Carmel
Kyle Smith continues to make jaws drop and keep opposing defensive coordinators awake at night.
Lancaster Catholic’s junior QB picked apart Mount Carmel in the PIAA Double-A state quarterfinals last Saturday afternoon in Hersheypark Stadium, completing 16-of-26 passes for 324 yards and a pair of touchdowns with no picks – which has become his trademark.
Smith has been picked off just four times this season – in 253 attempts. He went a staggering nine games in a row without an interception, before being picked in the District 3 Double-A title game against Middletown; it was his first blemish since Week 4 against Donegal.
His numbers are simply staggering:
165-of-253 (a cool 65 percent) for 3,015 yards and 41 touchdown passes against just four picks. His QB efficiency rating is an off-the-chart 215.6.
And he’s one of the most humble kids I’ve ever come across. He routinely shuns the spotlight, instead heaping praise on his line and the weapons around him.
I’ve always admired him for that. Smith could have a gigantic ego. He doesn’t.
I caught up with him after Catholic’s 41-28 win over Mount Carmel, and we chatted about the big victory, about the “Boise” hook-and-lateral play he and his teammates pulled off, and about what’s next for the Crusaders.
