Lancaster Catholic WR chats about hook-and-lateral play vs. Mount Carmel

Lancaster Catholic’s Tyler Purvis // LNP photoThe play is called “Boise”.

And somehow, some way, Lancaster Catholic pulled it off last Saturday afternoon against Mount Carmel in a PIAA Double-A state quarterfinal game in Hersheypark Stadium.

“Boise” is Catholic’s version of the hook-and-lateral play.

You might recall that play (NFL buffs) from the classic Miami-San Diego game back in the day, when the Chargers pulled it off. I can still see Kellen Winslow being carried off the field with that towel draped over his head. Wow.

Boise State also pulled off a hook-and-lateral against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl a few years back. Then Ian Johnson proposed to his girlfriend on the field after the game.

Hence Catholic’s “Boise” call, which should look a little something like this …

QB Kyle Smith throws a pass over the middle to WR Tyler Purvis.

Purvis makes the catch and draws attention (a corner and at least one safety, maybe even an OLB), before pitching to WR Travis Jankowski, who is running a drag route in front of him.

Jankowski takes the pitch and rumbles down the sideline, busting a tackle or two on his way into the end zone.

Piece of cake, right?

“Never works in practice,” Catholic coach Bruce Harbach harrumphed after the game.

“Boise” worked against Mount Carmel – and talk about perfect timing: Final play of the half, giving the Crusaders a 21-7 lead and a boatload of momentum.

The play went off without a hitch: Smith hit Purvis, who drew attention and flipped to Jankowski, who did indeed bust a tackle or two before plunging into the end zone.

Incredible.

I was able to catch up with Purvis after the game and chat about “Boise”, which he was more than happy to talk about.
