Bulldogs’ gritty playmaker previews district semifinal showdown vs. Bishop McDevitt
When you think Wilson, you usually think defense first.
Ball-hawking, tackle-making linebackers. Rugged, blitz-happy ends. Hole-plugging tackles. And a secondary that, well, hasn’t had to do much run protecting this season because the big boys up front have cleaned that up quite well, thank you.
Through 12 games, Wilson’s defense (ranked No. 1 in the L-L League) has allowed just 745 rushing yards, which is an insanely low amount. Teams are averaging just 62 yards per game on the ground against the Bulldogs, who are 12-0 and the No. 1 seed in the District 3 Quad-A bracket.
Wilson will put its undefeated record (and D rep) on the line Friday against its toughest competition to date, longtime Mid-Penn powerhouse Bishop McDevitt, which will bring a very good offense to West Lawn.
I chatted with one of those guys in the secondary, Wilson senior Alex Fegley, about Wilson’s defense. He says he gets a kick out of playing behind guys like Colton Weaver, Pat Zerbe and Rodney Hill, who have made life miserable for ball-carriers this season.
Fegley is also Wilson’s top receiver, with 34 catches for 641 yards (18.9 per grab) and nine touchdowns.
He’s also one of my favorite players in the L-L League to watch, because he’s like 5-11, 160 – soaking wet – but he’s a playmaker and a major weapon, especially on special teams.
He had such a huge impact on this team this season that I named him my first-half MVP in Section 1.

Sorry about the quality. Didn’t have my A-No. 1 recording equipment handy.
