Crusaders’ fleet junior WR previews District 3 Double-A title game vs. Middletown

Lancaster Catholic WR Tyler Purvis - 42 catches, 951 receiving yards // LNP photoWhen you think posh positions, quarterback usually pops to mind first.

And at Lancaster Catholic, the Crusaders feature one of the best quarterbacks around in junior Kyle Smith.

Which makes wide receiver, at least at Catholic, perhaps the most posh position in that successful program – which will go for the gold Friday night when the Crusaders take on Middletown in the District 3 Double-A title game in Hersheypark Stadium.

Hey, if you’re an L-L League football fan, who wouldn’t want to run pass-patterns and catch footballs thrown by Mr. Smith? I mean, the kid hasn’t thrown a pick since Week 4, and his 36 touchdown passes are a single-season school record.

The Crusaders boast several clutch wideouts, like Steve Remley, who has 13 catches – 3 for touchdowns – and Travis Jankowski, who has 41 catches – a single-season school record 17 for touchdowns.

And Catholic has one of the L-L League’s ultimate deep threats in Tyler Purvis, who averages a cool 22.6 yards per catch. He’s got a team-high 42 grabs through 12 games, and his 951 receiving yards are a single-season school record, snapping a record that had stood in the Crusaders’ annals since 1968.

I chatted with Purvis about what it’s like playing wideout in the Crusaders’ spread attack, piloted by Smith, already an All-State pick as a sophomore, and very likely a repeat performer this season.

We also talked about Catholic’s success – Crusaders have won 11 games in a row and are headed back to Hershey – and about its next opponent, Middletown.
