Spartans’ senior QB talks about his team’s success, and looks forward to playing West York in District 3 Triple-A semifinals
If you’re a Lancaster-Lebanon League football fan, you know that Lancaster Catholic’s Kyle Smith and Lebanon’s James Capello – a pair of record-smashing quarterbacks – got a ton of ink (and blog copy) this season.
But there is another L-L League QB who needs to be mentioned in that group.
A: Because he’s put up some really good numbers.
And, more importantly, B: Because he and his team are still alive in the District 3 brackets.
Garden Spot senior Weston Martin has been a force this season. Using his wheels to make plays on the perimeter, he’s used his strong right arm to complete 106-of-218 passes for 1,798 yards and 25 touchdowns.
The 16 picks are a smidge high, but the 25 TDs are third-most in the league, and he’s averaging a gaudy 17.0 yards per completion. He’s done some damage tucking the ball under and taking off with it too.
Martin, who stepped in for four-year starter Tyler Horst and didn’t skip a beat piloting the Spartans’ spread attack, will lead Garden Spot to West York on Friday night, where the Spartans will take on the Bulldogs in a District 3 Triple-A semifinal game.
While Garden Spot’s running game has grabbed some of the spotlight in the postseason – Andersan Beamer has 308 yards and three TDs in two games – Martin is still extremely dangerous, especially with dual home-run threats Tyler Eby (44-910, 12 TDs) and Kyle Kelley (22-421, 5 TDs) on the flanks, plus sure-handed slot man/return specialist Derek Deshaw (16-175, 3 TDs).
Garden Spot has a lot of weapons. Martin has been an extremely capable triggerman.
I caught up with Martin after practice in frigid New Holland the other night. We talked about the Spartans’ multi-purpose, multi-functional offense, about winning a pair of district-playoff games, and about how Garden Spot plans on attacking West York in this win-or-go-home matchup.
