Barons’ linebacker chats about shutting down Cocalico’s high-powered O
Cocalico scatback Kyle Fisher was held under 100 yards twice this season.
And it was the same defense that held the Eagles’ breakaway back under 100 both times.
Manheim Central’s defense, which held Fisher to 88 rushing yards back in Week 4 in the Barons’ 56-33 victory, was up to its old tricks again last Friday night in the District 3 Triple-A quarterfinals.
Central held Fisher to 69 yards, and the Eagles to just 159 total yards – far, far below their per-game average of 442, which led the L-L League heading into the second round of Districts – and the Barons won 26-7 and advanced to the district semifinals for the first time since 2006.
One of Central’s ringleaders on D is LB Lowen Johnson, who helped curtail Fisher and the Eagles’ Veer O attack.
I caught up with Mr. Johnson after Central’s big victory, and we chatted about why the Barons’ D was so successful against Cocalico, about Central’s big goal-line stand, when they held the Eagles on downs after they had a first-and-goal at the 3, and about where the Barons go from here.
