Barons’ senior linebacker chats about defending Cocalico’s powerful Veer option attack
If there is one person who is especially jacked for Friday’s much-anticipated District 3 Triple-A quarterfinal game pitting Section 2 champ Manheim Central against Section 2 runner-up Cocalico, it is definitely Barons’ senior linebacker Travis Ebersole.
Ebersole, a First-Team Section 2 All-Star a year ago, went down with a knee injury in Week 2 against Wilson, and he was not on the field in Week 4, when Central went to Denver, fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter, and then zoomed past Cocalico for a 56-33 win.
So needless to say, Ebersole is jonesing for the rematch, where the winner will advance to the district semifinals, and the loser will report immediately to basketball and/or wrestling practice.
Ebersole is a key cog on Central’s defense, which is yielding 236 yards per game – fifth-best in the L-L League. But the Barons’ D will have its hands full with Cocalico, which has cranked out an incredible 4,216 rushing yards through 11 games.
But the good news for Central is that Ebersole will be on the field this time, unlike Week 4.
I chatted with Travis about Central’s defense, about how the Barons will try and contain Eagles’ 1,000-yard backs Kyle Fisher and Austin Hartman, and about how hungry Central is to win the district title – which has eluded the Barons since 2005.
