Reinhart’s L-L football Week 8 preview caps

October 15th, 2008 7:24 pm · 0 comments

I’m not having the greatest week of my life, so if these preview capsules seem a tad shorter than usual, well, sorry about that. But I did the best I could to jam as much info about all 12 games on the Week 8 slate into this tidy package …

Wilson’s D ganging up on Hempfield’s Manny Mendez // LNP photoTHE GAME: Manheim Township (2-2, 4-3) @ Wilson (4-0, 7-0), Friday, 7 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Manheim Township dropped a 20-19 gut-wrencher to Penn Manor. … Wilson pummeled cross-town foe Reading 46-6 and remained in a tie for first place with Penn Manor.
NOTABLE: Manheim Township topped Wilson 26-7 in Week 9 last year in a driving rainstorm in Neffsville. … Wilson is ranked fifth in Quad-A in the latest Harrisburg Patriot-News state poll.
KEY STATS: Manheim Township’s key stat is 5 – in its three losses, the Blue Streaks have lost by a grand total of five points (Red Lion 3-0, Elizabethtown 28-27, Penn Manor 20-19.). … Wilson’s key stat is 549 – the Bulldogs have given up just 549 rushing yards, the least in the league.
ABOUT MANHEIM TOWNSHIP: Lost 370 yards on penalty march-offs, the most in the league. … No. 1 punting unit in the league, averaging 49.0 yards per boot. … Coach Mike Melnyk wouldn’t confirm or deny it, but according to this report, Dan Wertz, who pilots Township’s ‘Razorback’ offensive package, will miss the game with an injury.
ABOUT WILSON: Bulldogs are in cruise control after walloping Reading. … Scored 279 points, the most in the league, with a plus-210 scoring margin, the best in the league. … Surrendered 69 points, the least in Section 1 and second-least in the league. … Reigning Section 1 Linebacker of the Year Colton Weaver should be back after missing some time with a shoulder injury.

QUOTABLE: Manheim Township coach Mike Melnyk – “Wilson is legit. They are good enough that they only put five guys in the box sometimes, and still stop you. They are multiple defensively, and they play very hard. … Their offense can run and throw and their kicking game and return game are outstanding. … They are probably the best team I’ve seen in Section 1 in the 10 years I’ve been in this league … with no disrespect to any of those great Reading, McCaskey, Wilson teams of four or five years ago. … Our team has had to come back from some setbacks already this year, and we’ll bounce back again … hopefully this week.”

Wilson coach Doug Dahms – “Township is a nice football team with some really good talent. They run their ‘Razorback’ offense well, and shift a lot to get good mismatches for their zone-blocking scheme. … Wertz is a good zone runner, and (senior Nick) Sizemore gives them power as well as a good blocker. They will stretch us out defensively and then take the cutback lanes. Our secondary needs to do a good job tackling and recognizing their play-action game. … We’ll have to be able to throw well against them, and hope we can move the ball offensively. Their quickness and their blitz game could give us some problems. … This game is always a dogfight … they’re coming off a very tough loss, so they should be very charged up and ready to play.”

McCaskey coach Scott Feldman // LNP photoTHE GAME: McCaskey (0-4, 0-7) @ Cedar Crest (1-3, 1-6), Friday, 7 p.m.
LAST WEEK: McCaskey took Warwick to the wire before falling 21-19. … Cedar Crest was crunched by Hempfield 54-14.
NOTABLE: McCaskey edged Cedar Crest 18-13 in Week 9 last year in Lancaster.
KEY STATS: McCaskey’s key stat is 23 – the Red Tornado has turned the ball over 23, tied for most in the league (Ephrata, Pequea Valley). … Cedar Crest’s key stat is 42 – the Falcons have been penalized 42 times, the most in Section 1.
ABOUT McCASKEY: Played perhaps its best game to date against Warwick, but could be shorthanded because of some personnel issues during the week. Keep an eye on that.
ABOUT CEDAR CREST: Coming off otherwise forgettable back-to-back-to-back losses to Wilson (55-14), Manheim Township (40-14) and Hempfield (54-14).

QUOTABLE: McCaskey coach Scott Feldman – “Right now it’s not about Cedar Crest; it’s about us. We had some players missing practice … it’s going to be difficult with the mentality that a lot of our players have.”

Cedar Crest coach Mike Robinson – “McCaskey is always dangerous at the skill positions. On offense (QB) Adrian Westbrook is a good athlete who needs to be contained on the edge. Leequan LaRue and Brandon Williams on the outside have the ability to make a big catch at any time. We’ll need to prevent the big play.”

Warwick coach Bob Locker and his Warriors will welcome unbeaten Penn Manor // LNP photoTHE GAME: Penn Manor (4-0, 7-0) @ Warwick, (3-1, 5-2), Friday, 7 p.m.
ONLINE: Keith Schweigert will be blogging live from Lititz, supplying scoring updates, answering questions and posting scores from around the league. You can find Keith’s live blog on the L-L League Insider at lancsports.com.
LAST WEEK: Penn Manor nipped Manheim Township 20-19 to snap a three-way tie for first with the Blue Streaks, and remain in a tie for first with Wilson. … Warwick held off McCaskey at the finish line 21-19.
NOTABLE: Warwick topped Penn Manor 38-19 in Week 9 last year in Millersville.
KEY STATS: Penn Manor’s key stat is 55 – the Comets have yielded just 55 points in seven games, the least in the league. … Warwick’s stat is 17 – with 983 yards, senior RB Eric Resch needs 17 yards to join the 1,000-yard club this season. He enters the week third in the league in rushing.
ABOUT PENN MANOR: Comets did it again, coming up large down the stretch and going to 7-0 with a clutch one-point win over Manheim Township. It was Penn Manor’s first win over Township in forever. … Third-ranked D in the league (169.3 yards per game).
ABOUT WARWICK: Back-to-back nail-biters for the Warriors, but you know they’ll take them: 16-15 over Reading on Ryan Yohn’s last-minute field goal; 21-19 over McCaskey. … Tied (with Cocalico) for least amount of punts through seven weeks (14).

QUOTABLE: Penn Manor coach Todd Mealy – “There is a reason why Warwick has won five games – collectively, they’re a solid team. Resch is an above average running back with good vision and quickness. (QB Randy) Yost is another threat to run the ball, and he’s led an offense that’s scored a lot of points this season. Although they’ve had some games go the wire, they’ve found a way to win, and that’s a sign that the kids know how to win games. … Our chances of beating Warwick are based on consistent play from our defensive line and secondary. Also, we’ll have to clean things up a bit on offense. We’ve been sloppy on that side of the ball … nine turnovers in the last three games is uncharacteristic and not acceptable.”

Warwick coach Bob Locker – “Penn Manor is obviously an excellent football team. Defensively, they’re the best team we’ve faced this year. They flow to the ball and they like to hit you. Their linebackers are studs. … They’re efficient on offense, and they make very few mistakes. They play with an attitude and believe in themselves. We face a very difficult task in preparing for them.”

Hempfield QB Jarvis Cummings on the go earlier this season vs. Garden Spot // LNP photoTHE GAME: Reading (0-4, 1-6) @ Hempfield (2-2, 5-2), Friday, 7 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Reading was hammered by Wilson 46-6. … Hempfield steamrolled Cedar Crest 54-14.
NOTABLE: Hempfield routed Reading 46-21 in Week 9 last year in Reading.
KEY STATS: Reading’s key stat is 49 – the Red Knights have 49 first downs, the least in the league. … Hempfield’s key stat is 1,491 – between his feet (758 rushing) and his arm (733), senior QB Jarvis Cummings has accounted for 1,491 yards.
ABOUT READING: Grabbed a quick 6-0 lead on Warwick, and then gave up 46 unanswered points. … Last in the league in total offense (163.6 yards per game).
ABOUT HEMPFIELD: Up-and-down sort of a season for the Black Knights, who had an ‘up’ moment last Friday, dropping 54 points on Cedar Crest.

QUOTABLE:  Hempfield coach Bob Forgrave – “We have to execute on offense and we have to run to the ball on defense. We also need to control the clock on offense, and eliminate the big plays on defense. We’re working to get better every week. … (Reading RB Fruquan) Gaston is very good and very fast.”

Manheim Central’s Dakota Royer makes an over-the-shoulder grab earlier this season vs. Solanco // LNP photoTHE GAME: Elizabethtown (3-1, 5-2) @ Manheim Central (4-0, 5-2), Friday, 7 p.m.

ON THE TUBE: Blue Ridge Cable TV-11 will have the live broadcast. Make sure to tune in to the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. for a breakdown of this game by yours truly. I mean, why in the world would you possibly want to miss that?
ON THE RADIO: This game will be broadcast live by WPD-AM 1600. Man, a crowded press box.
LAST WEEK: Elizabethtown was edged by Cocalico 35-34 and fell out of a first-place tie in the section chase. … Manheim Central cruised passed rival Conestoga Valley 34-7 and took over sole possession of first place in the section.
NOTABLE: Elizabethtown thumped Manheim Central 56-14 in Week 9 (on a Monday night) last year in E-town.
KEY STATS: Elizabethtown’s key stat is 1,558 – the backfield trio of Conrad Heisey (600), Shane Rosenberry (492) and Mitch Weidman (466) have combined for 1,558 rushing yards. … Manheim Central’s key stat is 111 – the Barons have outscored their opponents by 111 points (230-119).
ABOUT ELIZABETHTOWN: Bears are coming off their first section loss, a topsy-turvy, back-and-forth 35-34 setback to Cocalico – in Etown. … Had lost the last 20 in a row in this series before last year’s big win.
ABOUT MANHEIM CENTRAL: Barons are sitting alone in first place at 4-0, although the last two wins have come against winless Ephrata (61-14) and Conestoga Valley (34-7). That’s an aggregate 95-21, by the way.
CHASING HISTORY: Manheim Central coach Mike Williams is just one victory away from tying former Newport and Cedar Cliff coach Bob Craig for the most coaching victories in District 3 history. Craig, who coached Newport from 1957-59 and Cedar Cliff from 1963-2000, was 282-144-11 in his career. Coming into Friday’s game, Williams is 281-58-3 overall with the Barons.

QUOTABLE: Elizabethtown coach Jeff Polites – “It’s week in and week out. We’re going to hammer down this week and try and get back on track and go over there (to Manheim) and give it our best shot and see what happens. It’s going to be an exciting finish at the end here. It really is. A lot of good teams have to play each other at the end. … this is exciting.”

Manheim Central coach Mike Williams – “Elizabethtown runs the Wing-T about as well as anybody around here, and they have really good running backs who can all break tackles and run hard. They keep coming at you. And they have a good defense; they have the full compliment. … E-town is a physical football team. They’re going to rock you. That’s always been a trait of E-town football. … Manheim Central-E-town is always a grudge match, so they’ll be ready for us. We kind of pointed to this game at the end of last season. They beat us pretty handily last year. I hope our kids are aware of that, and I hope they’ll use that as motivation.”

Cocalico’s Kyle Fisher - 1,102 rushing yards, 16 rushing TDs for Eagles // LNP photoTHE GAME: Garden Spot (3-1, 5-2) @ Cocalico (3-1, 6-1), Friday, 7 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Garden Spot blanked Ephrata 30-0. … Cocalico rallied in the second half and handed Elizabethtown its first section loss this season, 35-34.

ABOUT COCALICO: Eagles are (horrible pun alert) flying high after rallying past Elizabethtown 35-34 last Friday. Great game there. … Reigning New Era Player of the Week Kyle Fisher is second in the league in rushing yards (1,102) and he leads the league with 16 rushing touchdowns. … Eagles have rushed for 2,705 yards – by far the most in the league. The next closest is Elco (1,856). … Tied (with Warwick) with a league-low 14 punts.

QUOTABLE: Garden Spot coach Matt Zamperini – “Cocalico’s running attack can be brutal … their backs are very talented and fit into the roles of their offense perfectly. Their offensive line is quick, aggressive and precise. I’m very impressed. … What makes them so good is that they’re always moving the ball forward … rarely a broken play, a missed assignment, a penalty or loss of yardage. And when they throw, it’s a high-percentage completion. Defending their option is always about playing disciplined and assignment football. That’s what we have to do, along with being productive on offense ourselves.”

Cocalico coach Dave Gingrich – “We can only take care of ourselves. The best we can do is just play better the next three games, and if we’re fortunate to come out on top … whatever it is it is. I can live with that, and our guys can live with that.”

CV’s Kevin Kelley - taking direct snaps behind center // LNP photoTHE GAME: Lebanon (2-2, 5-2) @ Conestoga Valley (0-4, 0-7), Friday, 7 p.m.

ABOUT LEBANON: “Air Raid” was back in the saddle against Solanco, piling up 41 points in the victory. … Don’t look now, but senior WR Jordan Clentimack is well on his way to another All-State season: He leads the L-L League in receptions (50), receiving yards (763) and TD grabs (8). … Cedars lead the league with 1,699 passing yards.
ABOUT CONESTOGA VALLEY: Losing streak hit 14 with loss to Manheim Central. And the Buckskins are now 2-17 since beating the Barons in Week 10 in 2006. Last win was a non-league W over Cedar Crest in Week 3 last year. … Keep an eye on junior RB Kevin Kelley, who lined up behind center and took some direct snaps last week against Central. It worked: he rushed for 168 yards and a TD.

QUOTABLE: Lebanon coach Gerry Yonchiuk – “CV is very athletic and very scary. Kevin Kelley is the guy that you must contain. He is a three-year varsity starter, and he can take it to the house at any time.”

Conestoga Valley coach Gerad Novak (to Lancaster Newspapers) about lining Kelley up behind center – “We’ve been practicing forms of it throughout the year. We put Kevin in at quarterback because we thought we’d have more success running the football.”

Ephrata coach Jim Vieland // LNP photoTHE GAME: Ephrata (0-4, 0-7) @ Solanco (2-2, 4-3), Friday, 7 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Ephrata was shutout by Garden Spot 30-0. … Solanco came up on the short end of a wild 41-35 final to Lebanon.

ABOUT EPHRATA: Last in the league in turnover ratio (minus-13, with a league-high 23 giveaways).
ABOUT SOLANCO: Gave Lebanon all it could handle before falling 41-35.

QUOTABLE: Ephrata coach Jim Vieland – “Solanco looks big and physical, and I know that their players have a lot of pride coming off a co-section championship last season. … They hit really well on defense, and offensively they provide a lot of wrinkles running the Wing-T from the gun. … Every week provides us with another quality opponent, and this week is no exception.”

Solanco coach Joe Pearson – “Ephrata is very multiple in what they do, and they love to feed their athletes the ball. Defensively they have size and they really play downhill. We’ll need to play all four quarters and be physical in our approach.”

Northern Lebanon coach Jack Beidler // LNP photoTHE GAME: Donegal (1-4, 2-5) @ Northern Lebanon (3-2, 5-2), Friday, 7 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Donegal was blanked by Lampeter-Strasburg 39-0. … Northern Lebanon was waxed by Lancaster Catholic 61-0.

ABOUT NORTHERN LEBANON: Smarting after the 61-point loss at Lancaster Catholic. And heavy hearts in the Fredericksburg, where a family member from the football team passed away last week. Better days ahead for Northern Lebanon.

QUOTABLE: Donegal coach Bill Groff – “We need to get our house in order and play with some inspiration and emotion.”

Northern Lebanon coach Jack Beidler – “We need to stop their Wing-T offense to be successful. Their running backs – especially (senior FB Kyle) Witmer – run very hard and have the ability to break tackles. We need to bounce back at home, and the best way to do that is to get back to running the football.”

Elco coach Mark Evans // LNP photoTHE GAME: Elco (3-1, 4-3) @ Annville-Cleona (4-0, 5-2), Friday, 7 p.m.
ON THE RADIO: This game will be broadcast live by WLBR-AM 1270.

ABOUT ANNVILLE-CLEONA: Little Dutchmen have lost just 115 yards in penalty march-offs, the least in the league.

QUOTABLE: Elco coach Mark Evans – “This is a rivalry game, so throw the records out the window. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter where we or Annville-Cleona are at in the standings; we have a great rivalry with Annville-Cleona based on mutual respect. … This is always a hard-fought game. It won’t be a game-plan game; it will be a game played with a lot of heart and emotion on both sides. … They’re a good, well coached club. I always look forward to the Annville-Cleona game. It will be a good Lebanon County slugfest.”

Annville-Cleona coach Terry Lehman on Elco junior QB Arron Achey – “Elco goes the way Achey goes. They like to spread you out with three, four or five receivers and then let Achey make it happen. He never leaves the field during a game. He returns kicks and plays defense. … The county rivalry will just add more hot sauce to the wings.”

Lancaster Catholic junior QB Kyle Smith - 4,055 career passing yards // LNP photoTHE GAME: Lancaster Catholic (4-0, 6-1) @ Columbia (0-4, 1-6), Friday, 7 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Lancaster Catholic squashed Northern Lebanon 61-0 and remained in a tie for first place with Annville-Cleona. … Columbia was blanked by Annville-Cleona 35-0.

ABOUT COLUMBIA: Senior RB Dakotah Lightfoot leads the L-L League in rushing yards (1,115). … Crimson Tide is yielding 409.3 yards a game, the most in the league.

QUOTABLE: Lancaster Catholic coach Bruce Harbach – “You can throw the records out with this one. Columbia might be struggling, but they will be prepared for us. … They can cause some problems on both sides of the ball, and we’d better be prepared to stop their running back (Lightfoot), or we’ll be in for a long night. He can break a long one at any time.”

Pequea Valley coach Curtis Waltman // LNP photoTHE GAME: Lampeter-Strasburg (2-2, 2-5) @ Pequea Valley (0-4, 0-7), Friday, 7:30 p.m.

QUOTABLE: Pequea Valley coach Curtis Waltman – “L-S is better than what its record indicates – and that was very evident when they took Lancaster Catholic down to the wire. They are very talented and they are a well coached team, and they don’t have any weaknesses that you can exploit. You just have to play solid, disciplined football for four quarters to compete with them.”
