Week 7 is in the books … and here are my ‘3 Stars’ from Friday night’s games …
Derek Deshaw, senior WR/DB, Garden Spot – A big night on both sides of the ball for the Spartans’ two-way threat, who picked off three passes and hauled in a TD catch in Garden Spot’s 30-0 whitewash over Ephrata. Deshaw returned one of his three thefts 47 yards for a touchdown, and he also hauled in an 8-yard TD pass from Weston Martin, as the Spartans improved 3-1 in Section 2, and remained just a game behind sole leader Manheim Central in the race.
Chad Frey, junior RB/LB, Lampeter-Strasburg – Frey had his fingerprints all over the Pioneers’ 39-0 Section 3 win over Donegal, returning a punt for a score and getting a pair of rushing touchdowns in the victory. Frey returned a punt 56 yards for a score, and he had TD runs of 7 and 12 yards, respectively, for L-S, which picked up a much-needed victory. The Pioneers improved to 2-2 in the section, and must win out to salvage a .500 season.
Kyle Smith, junior QB, Lancaster Catholic – In the much-anticipated rematch game against Northern Lebanon, Smith was super, completing 9-of-14 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns in the Crusaders’ 61-0 victory. Smith also had a 36-yard TD run in the rout, as Catholic improved to 4-0 in Section 3 and remained in a first-place tie with Annville-Cleona. Smith had an 8-yard TD pass to Travis Jankowski, a 34-yard TD pass to Kevin Cotchen, and a 60-yard TD pass to Tyler Purvis against Northern Lebanon.
