Peanut butter and jelly.
Salt and pepper.
Taxes and, um, that other thing.
Donegal and the Wing-T offense.
Some things just go together.
Like the latter – the Indians’ football program and the Wing-T offense are synonymous.
And if you know anything about the Wing-T offense, you know you need a rugged fullback.
Say hello to Kyle Witmer, Donegal’s rugged senior fullback.
He’s the lucky duck who stepped into Blaine Miller’s big shoes this season for the Indians. All Miller did was rush for more than 1,000 yards three years in a row.
Witmer said something very, very interesting about stepping into Miller’s shoes before the start of the season.
“You use that as a motivator,” he said. “I want to be better than the previous guys.”
So far, so good.
Witmer had his second 200-plus yard rushing game last Friday night, piling up 220 yards on 14 carries – 15 yards per pop – and scoring four touchdowns in Donegal’s 55-13 L-L League Section 3 win over Pequea Valley.
For his efforts, Witmer is the New Era Player of the Week.
“We knew Kyle could step into that traditional fullback position in our offense and fill it,” Donegal coach Bill Groff said. “He’s tough. He’s quick. He’s strong. He’s got stamina. He’s everything you’re looking for in a running back. He’s an amazing kid.”
For a team that’s just 2-3 overall, Witmer has had an amazing season up to this point. On Sept. 5 against Eastern York, he rushed for 241 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Indians’ 36-7 victory. And through five games, he’s rushed for 642 yards – fourth-best in the league – and seven touchdowns.
He’s also a standout at linebacker, and he’s quite the weight room buff.
Witmer took a break from pumping iron on Monday afternoon and took a stab at the New Era’s 5 Questions:
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WING-T ATTACK, AND INTRODUCE US TO THE BIG UGLIES IN THE MIDDLE WHO DO ALL THE DIRTY WORK:
“I remember being in Midgets on the ‘D’ squad running the Wing-T. The center of that offense is the fullback, and I’ve always been a fullback. So I’ve grown up on the Wing-T. The only offense I’ve ever run is the Wing-T. … Our left tackle is Andrew Ross, our left guard is Tanner Edgell, our center is Morgan Rupp, our right guard is Wes Frey and our right tackle is J.D. Intrieri. They’ve done a great job opening holes for me. They’re a key part of our team.”
YOU’RE STEPPING INTO BLAINE MILLER’S LARGE SHOES. ANY ADDED PRESSURE THERE?
“I love playing fullback. I love running the ball. It’s my favorite part of the game. The way I look at it, you have to have high standards. You have to have something to work for. I want to be a good back. I don’t want to be just another running back. I want to take advantage of this opportunity.”
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CLASS IN SCHOOL?
“I like math … AP calculus right now. I’m pretty good at it, so it makes me like it more. I like that and I like physics. I enjoy numbers and those sorts of things.”
WHAT’S THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?
“Pineapple Express. I can’t even describe it. It’s hilarious. It’s so funny.”
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HANGOUT SPOT IN THE GREATER MOUNT JOY/MARIETTA AREA?
“Right now it’s Sonic because it’s a new place. We’re there like every night. We hang out there and get milkshakes and eat burgers, and it’s a nice spot to sit around and talk and hang out. And then we go home and play video games with our friends.”
